Nation Commander spans all of human history — from ancient grain empires to speculative far-future civilisations. Every era plays completely differently.
The 8 Playable Eras
Grain reserves, dynasty, plague, river logistics, tribute. Crises: succession, famine, raids, slave revolts.
Vassal oaths, knightly orders, the Church, crusades, dynastic marriages. Loyalty matters more than gold.
Trade companies, colonial governance, cannon foundries, naval supremacy, standing armies.
Mass conscription, railway logistics, industrial cartels, ideological movements, world wars, economic depression.
Nuclear deterrence, proxy wars, spy networks, arms races, missile crises, satellite surveillance.
Cyberattacks, disinformation, supply chain crises, climate disasters, soft power, drones, AEGIS destroyers.
Autonomous swarms, quantum cryptography, rogue AI deployments, deepfake elections, AI Defense Director cabinet role.
Orbital habitats, sovereign AIs, fusion abundance, megacorporate states, Constitutional AI Council, climate engineering.
The 10 Leadership Roles
Each role has different authority, different pressures, and different failure modes. Not all roles are available in every era.
Your empire is managed across 6 tabs. Here's what each one does and how to use it effectively.
The Command tab is your home dashboard. It shows all critical national stats at a glance — public approval, GDP, military readiness, national stability, diplomatic capital, and more. This is also where active directives and incoming crises surface. If something is wrong in your empire, the Command tab will show you first.
The Cabinet tab manages your political machinery — cabinet ministers, faction relationships, parliamentary dynamics, and election cycles. Keeping your coalition intact is as important as any military decision. Ministers can resign, betray you, or become your most powerful allies.
The Economy tab controls your nation's financial engine. Set interest rates, issue sovereign debt, subsidize industries, manage trade deficits, and fund research programs. Inflation is quiet until it collapses everything — watch the numbers closely.
The World tab is your foreign policy desk. Manage diplomatic relations with 190 real nations across military alliances (NATO, SCO, CSTO, ANZUS, Arab League) and economic blocs (G7, G20, BRICS, EU, ASEAN). Issue sanctions, open summits, recall ambassadors, and press UN resolutions.
The Intel tab is your shadow cabinet. Recruit foreign agents, authorize covert operations, run counter-intelligence sweeps, and brief leadership — truthfully or selectively. Your intelligence accuracy stat determines how reliable your threat assessments are. Available from Industrial Wars era onward.
The War Room is the most consequential tab in the game. Manage military readiness, authorize strike packages, control force structure, and — in nuclear eras — manage DEFCON and strategic deterrence. Declaring war requires approval from relevant civilian bodies depending on your role.
Starting a New Campaign
Swipe through the 8 historical periods and read the tagline for each. Ancient Kingdoms starts slow — ideal for learning. Cold War and Modern are the most balanced. Near-Future AI and Far Future are the most complex.
Choose from 55 real-world nations with authentic GDP, military data, alliance memberships, and diplomatic relationships. Use the filter chips — G20 (Cold War+) and Nuclear (Cold War+) filters only appear in eras where they're historically relevant.
Only roles available in your chosen era appear. The President has full unilateral authority. The Intelligence Chief can authorize covert ops freely. The Rebel Negotiator has almost no state powers. Choose based on how you want to engage with power.
Many critical actions — declaring war, nuclear authorization, major sanctions — require approval from parliament, the NSC, or civilian oversight. The approval probability is shown before you commit. Your legitimacy, public approval, and institutional trust all affect the outcome.
AI nations hold real diplomatic relationships, run their own economies, and escalate if provoked. Crises arrive based on the era's historical profile. In ancient eras, expect famine and plague. In the Cold War, expect missile close calls. In Near-Future AI, expect rogue model deployments and deepfake elections.
